Tennis Accuracy Challenge is designed and documented but not built. Rather than show you a card that leads nowhere, this page explains what the game is intended to be and why it is not finished. The playable games are on the games page.

Play something that works

The design

Accuracy Challenge scores on distance from a target centre rather than on hit or miss, and that single change makes it a different kind of problem. In a hit-or-miss game the correct strategy is to maximise your chance of a hit. In a distance-scored game the correct strategy is to minimise the variance of your shot placement, which is not the same thing and is considerably harder.

Targets shrink as the run progresses, and scoring scales with proximity rather than stepping between bands, so there is no point at which the game stops rewarding precision. A player whose shots cluster tightly slightly off-centre will outscore a player who occasionally nails the middle and otherwise sprays, and that is the lesson the format exists to teach.

The mechanic it needs is an aim-and-release control that is precise enough to reward small corrections without becoming fiddly on touch. That is the open problem. Our current prototype is precise on a mouse and unusable on a phone, which for this site is a failure rather than a trade-off.

Planned specification

A planned precision challenge where shrinking target zones appear on the far court and points scale with how close to the centre of the target the ball lands.

  • Objective: Place twenty shots as close to the target centres as possible.
  • Intended controls: Keyboard and Touch
  • Intended difficulty: Hard
  • Intended session length: 4-7 minutes
For developers

Add assets/js/games/tennis-accuracy.js. The aim-and-release control is not in the shared engine; implement it in the game module using g.pointer for drag state.

Questions about Tennis Accuracy Challenge

How will Accuracy Challenge differ from Serve Challenge?

Serve Challenge is a timing problem — you are choosing a moment on a sweeping meter. Accuracy Challenge will be a placement problem, where you aim directly and are scored on how close you land to a target centre.

Why score on distance rather than on hitting the target?

Because distance scoring rewards consistency rather than luck. A tight cluster slightly off-centre beats an occasional bullseye surrounded by misses, which is the more useful skill.

What can I play instead right now?

Tennis Serve Challenge has target zones and scores partly on proximity, so it is the closest playable equivalent.
