This game is not playable yet

Tennis Power Shot is designed and documented but not built. Rather than show you a card that leads nowhere, this page explains what the game is intended to be and why it is not finished. The playable games are on the games page.

The design

Power Shot is a study in one mechanic: hold to charge, release to hit. The twist is that charging does not only add power, it narrows the window in which contact can be made. A fully charged shot is the fastest and also the one you are most likely to miss entirely.

That tension is the whole game, and it is a tension most charge mechanics get wrong. In a lot of games the charge is free — you hold the button while waiting anyway, so maximum charge is simply correct and the mechanic adds nothing but a delay. Making the charge cost something turns it into a real decision that changes shot by shot depending on how much time the incoming ball gives you.

The tuning problem is making the cost legible. A player has to be able to see that they are trading margin for speed, in the moment, without reading a manual. Our current approach is to shrink the visible strike window as the charge builds, so the trade is literally on screen, but it needs to be tested against players who have not been told what to look for.

Planned specification

A planned risk-and-reward game built on a charge mechanic. Holding the button longer produces a faster shot but shrinks the window in which contact can be made, so the optimal charge is rarely the maximum charge.

  • Objective: Win rallies by choosing a charge level that matches the incoming ball.
  • Intended controls: Hold and release, Keyboard and Touch
  • Intended difficulty: Medium
  • Intended session length: 3-5 minutes
For developers

Add assets/js/games/tennis-power-shot.js. The engine's input hook reports both press and release for the 'action' key, which is what the charge mechanic needs — see the input(g, action, down) callback.

Questions about Tennis Power Shot

How is this different from the smash meter in Tennis Smash?

The smash meter is earned through accurate play and then spent. A charge is chosen fresh on every single shot, and it has an immediate cost in timing margin rather than a prerequisite.

Will maximum charge always be best?

No, and that is the point of the design. A full charge shrinks the window in which you can make contact, so the right charge level depends on how much time the incoming ball gives you.

What can I play now?

Tennis Smash has the closest feel, since it also rewards thinking one shot ahead rather than only reacting to the current one.
